Common Pediatric Dental Emergencies
Knocked-Out Permanent Tooth
Time is critical. A knocked-out permanent tooth has the best chance of being saved if you act within 30 minutes.
Toothache or Dental Pain
Rinse with warm water and gently floss around the tooth to make sure nothing is lodged. Do not place aspirin against the gum tissue. You can give an age-appropriate dose of ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain relief. Call us at (281) 681-9880. Tooth pain in a child is always worth a same-day evaluation.
Knocked-Out Baby Tooth
Do not try to reinsert a knocked-out baby tooth. Attempting to replant it can damage the developing permanent tooth beneath it. Call us at (281) 681-9880. We will assess the area and determine if any follow-up care is needed.
Bitten Lip or Tongue
Apply gentle pressure with a clean cloth to control bleeding. If bleeding does not slow within 10 to 15 minutes, or if the cut is deep, go to an emergency room. For injuries that involve the teeth or jaw in addition to soft tissue, call us at (281) 681-9880 first.
Chipped or Broken Tooth
Rinse your child's mouth with warm water. If there is swelling, apply a cold compress to the outside of the face. Save any broken tooth fragments if you can. Call (281) 681-9880 for a same-day appointment. Do not delay, even if your child is not in significant pain, as a chip or crack can worsen.
Dental Abscess
A dental abscess is a serious infection that requires prompt attention. Signs include significant swelling, fever, or severe pain. Call us immediately at (281) 681-9880. If our office is closed, go to the nearest emergency room. A dental abscess is not a wait-and-see situation.
