What Sealants Are and How They Work
A dental sealant is a thin, clear or tooth-colored coating applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, typically the first and second permanent molars. The sealant flows into the grooves and fissures of the tooth and bonds to the surface, creating a physical barrier against food, bacteria, and the acid they produce.
The application takes a few minutes per tooth. The tooth is cleaned and dried, a mild conditioning solution is applied briefly, the sealant is painted on, and a small light is used to harden it. Your child will not feel anything during the process beyond the tools in their mouth. There are no shots and no drilling involved.

When Does Dr. Jon Recommend Sealants?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends dental sealants for children as soon as the first permanent molars erupt, typically around age six, and again when the second permanent molars come in around age twelve. Wheeler Pediatric Dentistry assesses sealant needs at every routine visit and applies them when indicated.
Children with deep grooves in their back teeth, a history of cavities, or a diet higher in fermentable carbohydrates are particularly good candidates. Dr. Jon will give you a direct recommendation based on your child's specific tooth anatomy and cavity risk.
